A question from Campbell posted in the announcement thread Campbell Ritchie wrote:Now that Java8 is out and there are new features, do we think Bloch ought to write a 3rd edition or leave the new features to people like Horstmann? You will find several discussions of Java8 books in the Java8 forum. What do you think? |

My favourite software design tool is a pencil, paper, and an eraser. If your handwriting is a bit 'free-form' then try writing slower to improve it, the extra time taken will give you more time to consider your design options. |

Aftab Hassan wrote:New Server RunTime Environment I'm guessing that this is an option you found in Eclipse? I'm also guessing by the 'apt-get' reference that you're using Linux. In which case if you run the command " ps -ef | grep java" and look for the process that looks like your application then you'll most likely be able to find out what servlet container is being used. It'll be the one bundled in with Eclipse, probably Jetty or Tomcat. |

It is the intention that the choice of books will be driven by the members. I picked the first one just to get us going although we did have a small vote on it in the original thread. I agree that some advance notice of the schedule would be help the logistics of getting hold of a copy of the book. I think a sticky thread would serve that purpose just nicely. |

Then option 1 applies. They'll just be looking for a basic working knowledge of using the shell (equivalent to Windows Command Prompt). My recommendation for practice would be to install Ubuntu on a VM like VirtualBox. |

Howdy folks, Welcome to the Bunkhouse Lounge! This is where we come to talk about our favourite books, discuss what we like, don’t like, don’t understand, anything at all. There’s enough room for everyone so drop in and make yourself comfortable. For the Month of August we are inviting you to read Joshua Bloch’s “Effective Java” with us. Grab yourself a copy and let the discussions begin! Thinking of buying a copy from Amazon? Support CodeRanch by using this referral link: - Amazon (US) : “Effective Java” by Joshua Bloch |
| [+] GNU/Linux » Learning Linux for a Job Interview (Go to) | | Guillermo Ishi |
I think it really depends on what the job is that you're applying for. That requirement would mean different things. If you're applying for a Software Developer job, then that statement means "Our application servers are Linux and we want you to roughly know your way around them. Oh by the way, our admin guys tells us it's Bash". If you're applying for a Server Support / Admin role then that statement means "Our application servers are Linux and we want you know everything there is to know about them. Oh and by the way, our existing scripts are written in Bash and you'd better know why that's important". |

Howdy, welcome to the Ranch! I've edited the title of your post, using all capitals gives the impression you're shouting so please KeepItDown (<- read this article) You'll get the most help here if you ShowSomeEffort first. We are NotACodeMill so nobody is going to do it for you. So, show us what you've tried so far and tell us what particular thing you're having trouble with. Something along the lines of "I thought doing this thing here would work but it didn't. I expected this to happen but instead that happened" would be a good place to start. |

Hello P Mayur, Please be mindful that we are all volunteers here and a bit of patience on your part goes a long way. We have a couple of articles discussing our policy on this that I invite you to read. Firstly -> EaseUp, secondly -> PatienceIsAVirtue. You've been getting some excellent help here so far so please sit tight, I'm sure that help will continue in due course. In the meantime why don't you take the opportunity to read over again the posts from Ulf and Henry to see if there's something you missed. For example, the suggestion to put some System.out.println() statements in your code to print out the values of your variables at key points of your code flow will help you closely inspect whether you are getting the values you expect at those points in your program. It's a simple but effective technique. |

| [+] Java in General » My multithreaded program is giving Java out of memory error when run on large data (Go to) | | Monica Shiralkar |
With regards to deciding how big to make your Thread Pool, it depends on the hardware you are running your application on. Suppose you have a Quad Core machine, then you can only run 4 threads in parallel. If you're writing files to a physical mechanical disk then how many write heads does it have? You can't write 100 files in parallel if your disk only has 2 write heads. Often having a thread pool too large will actually degrade performance because you are introducing contention on your physical resources. Martin Thompson calls this Mechanical Sympathy |

| [+] Programmer Certification (OCPJP) » Where can I see how many certified Java Programmers are there in the world (categorized by country)? (Go to) | | Tim Cooke |
Suppose that you could find out such statistics. What good would it do you? It will not necessarily be representative of how many actual java developers there are in the World. For example: I'm a Java Developer but I'm not a "Certified" Java Developer in any way so I would not be counted in your statistics. Also some geographical regions put more importance on having a certification. In my observation it seems that in India people seem to hold certifications in quite high regard, but in the UK where I live nobody I've met is particularly fussed about it. But the whole point is moot because as Ulf says, you're very unlikely to be able to find out such information. |

I would not be so quick to dismiss Jeanne's suggestion of the Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture book. The majority of the patterns described in it are still very much as valid today as they were when published. Martin Fowler's website provides a pretty high level summary of each pattern but the book itself is the complete reference. Highly recommended. |
| [+] Servlets » How to exchange data between servlets in different nodes in same cluster (Go to) | | Andy Storm |
I don't want to belabour the point too much but "as fast as possible" is not a realistic requirement. This is the response you'll get from any customer when you ask them "How fast to you need it?". You need to clarify what this means and be able to define how fast is fast enough. Any faster than that is a waste. If you really do need performance to be "as fast as possible" then you'd better dust off that credit card because you're going to need it to buy that 10 acre data center filled with top of the range over-clocked super computer farm. Oh, and brace yourself for the monthly energy bill. |

Andy Storm wrote:but writing to database adds penalty to performance Until you know you have a performance problem and can prove that the bottleneck is in writing to your DB then I would not worry about it. Implement the simplest thing that solves your problem. Then if, and only if, you have observed substandard performance through thorough testing and measurement, should you look to implement any optimisations. Otherwise you may spend a lot of time, and potentially money, fixing an issue that just doesn't exist. |
| [+] Meaningless Drivel » What about politics in the office? (Go to) | | Jeanne Boyarsky |
Where there are people, there will be politics and opinions. That's just human nature. While your CEO is perfectly entitled to have an opinion, and he may choose to announce it to the break room, you are not obliged to agree with him or engage in a discussion about it with him. He may be just as outraged that you have no opinion on the matter as you are that he has such a strong opinion. |

That and the fact that replicating data across multiple, physically separated, nodes in a non-trivial / extremely hard problem. This is why projects like Hadoop exist and are so popular. |
