AI Code Tools
AI coding assistants have gone from "interesting autocomplete" to genuinely useful teammates in about two years. The current generation understands your full codebase, writes multi-file changes, runs tests, and catches bugs before you do.
The space breaks down roughly into three tiers:
- Inline autocomplete : GitHub Copilot, Codeium, Supermaven. They predict the next line or block as you type. Low friction, works in any editor.
- AI-native editors : Cursor, Windsurf. Built from the ground up around AI. They handle multi-file edits, chat with your codebase, and run commands autonomously.
- Autonomous agents : Devin, Codex, SWE-agent. You describe a task, they plan and execute it end-to-end. Still early, but improving fast.
Choosing the right tier
If you mostly want faster typing and fewer trips to Stack Overflow, tier 1 is enough. If you want AI to handle refactors, write tests, and scaffold features while you review, go tier 2. Tier 3 is worth exploring if you have well-defined, repeatable tasks — CI fixes, migration scripts, boilerplate endpoints.
