GraphQL App Recipes

This repo is an evolving work in progress. As I add more recipes, I will break these out into individual full-stack applications including the front end and adding additional examples. If you have any ideas, please feel free to either contribute or submit an issue!

This repo goes along with the tutorial on building AWS AppSync APIs using the Amplify GraphQL Transform library.

To learn more about GraphQL Transform library, check out the documentation.

To learn more about building full stack serverless applications with GraphQL and AWS Amplify, check out my post Infrastructure as Code in the Era of GraphQL and Full Stack Serverless.

Some applications may require additional custom authorization logic for certain subscriptions that you may not want accessible to all users. To learn more, check out the documentation here.

Giphy Clone

To deploy this app, use the following steps:

  1. Create the Amplify project in your app
amplify init
  1. Add a lambda function
amplify add function
  1. Enter the following when prompted lambdafunction

  2. From the root of your project, change into your function's source directory

cd amplify/backend/function/giphyfunction/src
  1. Install axios and dotenv
npm install axios && npm install -D dotenv
  1. Update the contents of your functions index.js file
const axios = require("axios"); const dotenv = require("dotenv"); dotenv.config(); exports.handler = (event, _, callback) => { const { GIPHY_API_KEY } = process.env; let apiUrl = `https://api.giphy.com/v1/gifs/search?api_key=${GIPHY_API_KEY}&q=hello`; if (event.arguments) { const { searchTerm = "hi", limit = 25 } = event.arguments; apiUrl = `https://api.giphy.com/v1/gifs/search?api_key=${GIPHY_API_KEY}&q=${searchTerm}&limit=${limit}`; } axios .get(apiUrl) .then(response => callback(null, response.data.data)) .catch(err => callback(err)); };
  1. Login to Giphy's Developer portal and create an app to get an API Key.

  2. Back in the function's src directory, create a .env file and add in the API Key that was obtained in the previous step as a secret.

GIPHY_API_KEY=<YOUR_API_KEY>

Your .env file should NOT be committed to Github

  1. Head back to the root of your project
cd ../../../../../
  1. Add the GraphQL API
amplify add api

Use the following GraphQL Schema:

type Gif { id: ID! slug: String! images: GifImage! } type GifImage { original: GifAttributes! fixed_width: GifAttributes! } type GifAttributes { url: String! width: String! height: String! } type Query { getGifs(searchTerm: String, limit: Int): [Gif] @function(name: "giphyfunction-${env}") }
  1. Deploy the Resources
amplify push
