I'm getting this error from GitHub Copilot when trying to use agent mode:

Sorry, your request failed. Please try again.
Request id: 8ba03910-5d8e-4191-81fe-f978c65f7afd
Reason: token expired or invalid: 403

This happened without any config changes on my side. I’ve tried:

• Restarting my IDE
• Signing out and back in
• Reauthorizing GitHub in settings

Still not resolved. Please advise or reset the token/session on your end.

The 403 token expired or invalid error typically means your authentication token for Copilot has expired or become invalid. Since you've already tried restarting the IDE, signing out/in, and reauthorizing — here are a few more things you can try:

Additional Steps:
Manually revoke Copilot authorization from your GitHub account:

Go to GitHub → Settings → Applications → Authorized OAuth Apps

Find “GitHub Copilot” and click “Revoke access”

Then, sign back in via your IDE to reauthorize from scratch

Clear IDE cache or authentication sessions:

If using VS Code:
Press Ctrl+Shift+P → search for Copilot: Sign Out, then restart and sign back in.

Ensure GitHub Copilot is enabled for your account and repository:

Go to https://github.com/features/copilot and confirm your subscription and access.

If none of these work, the issue might be on GitHub’s backend. In that case, I recommend contacting GitHub Support directly:

I believe it's mostly luck, since VS Code instances around the world have nothing in common except servers. Can't explain why reload command "fixes the servers", but it worked. Thanks! :)

bruv trust me Claude will take your mind to lala land with your code if you don't get furious at it. He tried it many times before and he always introduces 500 lines of new code when the fix was just changing one variable name all the time. I went from coding the hard work myself to letting AI do the work for me and I heavily revise after it because I don't trust it, but I am also slow at idea generation LMAO

Hey everyone,

Thanks for reporting this and being patient while dealing with these 403 errors in Copilot agent mode.

What happened

This was a service outage that hit on September 15-16, affecting users globally. The "token expired or invalid: 403" errors weren't actually authentication problems on your end it was a backend issue on our side. However, post this outage the errors reported in the thread could have variety of underlying issues.

Quick fixes that worked

Fastest solution: Reload VS Code (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+P → "Developer: Reload Window")

If that doesn't work:

1. Sign out of Copilot in your IDE
2. Go to github.com/settings/applications
3. Revoke access for "GitHub Copilot"
4. Sign back in through your IDE
