[2026-03-16] Incident Thread - Copilot #189795
-
We’re aware some users on Copilot Pro (complementary, trial and paid) are seeing premium/advanced models disappear from the VS Code model picker and/or show “Contact your admin,” and we’re actively investigating. In the meantime, please do not click "Start paid plan" as a workaround from the Copilot Pro trial - this will remove you from the trial and initiate a paid subscription. If you’re affected, please reply with your plan type (Student / Pro trial / Pro paid), VS Code + Copilot extension versions, OS, and roughly when the issue started. Subscribe to this Discussion for updates on this incident. Please upvote or emoji react instead of commenting +1 on the Discussion to avoid overwhelming the thread. Any account guidance specific to this incident will be shared in thread.

I am affected, upgraded from student to pro trial plan, and the issue started around 6 hours ago (could be longer, but that's when I woke up and noticed.) Happening on all my systems across the VSCode extension, web copilot chat and copilot CLI.

Affected – Copilot Pro Trial I’m also experiencing this issue. Plan: Copilot Pro Trial Claude Sonnet and Opus models were visible and working yesterday. However, starting today they no longer appear in the Copilot Chat model selector. I confirmed this is happening on my Pro trial account, and the premium/advanced models have disappeared from the VS Code model picker. The issue started approximately today (2026-03-16).

Today (2026-03-16), both Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Claude Opus 4.6 have disappeared from the model selector in Copilot Chat. These models were available and functioning correctly yesterday. Plan: Copilot Pro Trial

Seeing this in the GitHub cloud coding agent; only have Auto and GPT-5.1-Codex-Max available for my Copilot Pro trial. |

I've already clicked on the "Start Paid Plan" as this was the solution in another thread, although I was on the copilot pro plan. Is there any way to reverse this since this post mentioned that we should not click on the "Start Paid Plan"?

I ran into this issue about 2 days ago on the Student plan, right after Copilot announced that Opus would no longer be available for students. After upgrading to Pro+, all models showed the message “Contact your Admin.” The fix for me is to log out of VS Code and log back in. Everything's been normal after that.

I was using the student pack when the Claude model was removed. To continue using it, I activated the Pro trial, but I was still unable to access Claude Opus. As a workaround, I started the Pro subscription at the same hour, and I’ve now been charged $10 as well. Since I haven’t used the Pro trial even once and the issue has now been identified, could you please let me know how you will compensate or refund the $10 charge?

Plan type: Copilot Pro trial Issue description: However, premium/advanced models are no longer available in VS Code. They either disappear from the model picker or I get a message similar to “Contact your admin.” My billing setup is already complete: payment method added budget configured for additional usage Copilot Pro trial is active I also noticed an authorization hold for Copilot Pro on my card, so billing seems to have been set up successfully. The problem appears to be that my Copilot access/entitlement in VS Code has not refreshed correctly, or that premium model access is still blocked even though the Pro trial is active. I am affected by this issue and wanted to add my case here.

Common fix for Copilot Pro model picker issues in VS Code: ensure you're signed into GitHub in the IDE, restart VS Code, and update the extension. If models still disappear, verify your trial hasn't expired via GitHub account settings. Do not use 'Start paid plan' workaround to avoid accidental charges. For ongoing problems, contact GitHub Support with error details like screenshots and timestamps.
