@jreback Passes on py3 now. Can rebase if you like. Solution is a big hackist - happy to take some suggestions on dealing with unicode between py3 and py2.

alos note that we are moving the dataread stuff to a separate package, pandas-datareade, i'll send you an invite to the repo
