About Melvin

Melvin is a software engineer from Singapore 👨‍💻

A self-taught programmer, he has a keen interest in learning new languages, frameworks, and technologies that empower him to build software applications that can impact the world 🌎

With an avid passion for learning, he is constantly upgrading his coding skills through books, articles, YouTube videos, and Massive Open Online Courses 📖

He has founded an Open Source organization called Your First Open Source Project (YFOSP) - with over 350+ members from ~50 different countries worldwide. Through the organization, he advocates for the creation of safe community spaces that foster both diversity & inclusivity, regardless of your technical abilities 😊

Till date, YFOSP has awarded >350 Holopin digital badges to first-time contributors in appreciation of their open-source contributions on GitHub. YFOSP also contributed to sustainability efforts through Hacktoberfest’s tree-planting initiative, planting 2 trees (Markhamia lutea & Phyllanthus emblica) in Tanzania and India, offsetting 150 kg of CO₂, reducing global warming, and supporting biodiversity 🌳

As the 1st GitHub Campus Expert for Singapore Polytechnic, he organized 5 meetups and study support groups that mentored 70+ batchmates and strengthened their coding fundamentals, while providing technical and non-technical support to the GitHub team by 💪:

In 2022, the GitHub team recognized Melvin as one of the Top 5 Outstanding Community Citizens in GitHub Community for going above and beyond the galaxy to help others 🌟

Melvin, in 2023, was one of the 10 selected GitHub Campus Experts worldwide to receive a highly coveted GitHub Universe Scholarship. The scholarship provides deserving recipients (GitHub Universe Scholars) with an all-expenses-paid trip to attend GitHub Universe, an in-person tech conference in the USA where over 2,000 developers come together to learn about the latest technological developments in the industry 🤖

As the 1st Singaporean recipient of the prestigious GitHub Universe Scholarship (GitHub Universe Scholar), he was also honored to be a Global Conference Speaker at GitHub Universe USA 2023, sharing insights on AI and developer communities with an international audience of 50 representing 10+ universities and 10+ tech communities 🇺🇸

Melvin, in 2024, made history as the 1st Distinguished Regional Keynote Speaker at GitHub Field Day Malaysia, a regional tech conference organized by GitHub Education and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI, Malaysia). The conference, which was held at Sunway University (Malaysia’s Top Private University), was attended by ~100 leaders from 20+ universities and 35+ tech communities 🇲🇾

He is also the 1st Singaporean GitHub Campus Expert at the world-renowned National University of Singapore, where he served as a Developer Advocate and Program Mentor, and previously pursued postgraduate studies at the university (Asia’s Top University) 🥇
