I was taking my usual baseball-induced Sunday afternoon nap when a hailstorm blew through and knocked out the power in our neighborhood. The small UPS that provides backup power to our internet router lasted a good two hours before starting to complain. After that, we shrugged and went out to dinner. The outage lasted nearly five hours all told, but ultimately presented only a minor inconvenience - we didn't lose any food or have to worry about being dangerously hot.

Connor had checked out a board game from the library called Vast: The Crystal Caverns. It's one of those games where different players have different roles and goals. We played as Knight vs Goblins (winner: Knight) and Cave vs Dragon (winner: Dragon) - it was entertaining, but would have been more engaging with a larger number of players.

We're still in the process of figuring out where to put our new IKEA shelves. Today Robby performed surgery on the stand for his MIDI keyboard to make it narrower, so it's now possible to put one shelf unit in front of each side window in the living room. But if we do that, we need to figure out what to do with the tables that are currently in those spots. And so on.

I spent most of Saturday working on JavaScript exercises on Exercism. I'm discovering that the core syntax of JS isn't that bad as languages go, but the whole Document Object Model is still a mystery to me - I just haven't been able to find a bridge from the most basic DOM exercises to the hideous snarl lurking in the LJ code. But at least I'm getting a better feel for the syntax fundamentals than I had before.

Connor passed the test to get his learner's permit on Friday. We ended up driving out to the Talladega county courthouse since they had next-day appointments available, whereas the other listed locations within an hour's drive had at least a week's wait. I didn't mind the trip, since there wasn't much traffic and we were able to stop at Buc-ee's again on the way back.

I ordered a few skeins of yarn from WEBS for a gift I want to make for Will. The only craft project I've even touched in the past year was a small throw blanket that I knitted with my fingers using super-bulky yarn, which I finished in a few hours. I just haven't been feeling the urge lately to make stuff just for the enjoyment of the process of making it, not like I used to.

"basic DOM to whatever the hell my predecessor did with this code" is also a leap I'm having trouble making :(
