A woman who is found in an alley, raped and strangled to death with her own panty hose is somehow morally superior to a woman who has to explain to the authorities why her attacker has a fatal gun shot wound.

The United States system of government was designed with the purpose of preventing the majority from denying rights of the minority. If you say "well the majority doesn't believe Group A should be allowed to have the same rights and privileges as Group B" then you are going against the very foundations of this country.
AMENDMENT XIV
Passed by Congress June 13, 1866. Ratified July 9, 1868.
Section 1.
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Didn't we learn the first time that "separate yet equal" doesn't work?
