When I attempt to upvote this comment, I see:

Red error message, "You cannot vote for this comment"

I've been unable to locate any documentation on this:

Google search results for "'you cannot vote for this comment'" stack exchange", with one result on Math SE

Consequently, what is the cause?

You were logged in, right? And you didn't have trouble reaching the site earlier? Any captcha's encountered? For completeness can you include browser version, OS and if possible any network errors from the developer console of your browser when you retry the action. Commented May 13 at 17:39

  • @rene, I believe that I was authenticated, for I'd very recently commented. However, there's a slight possibility otherwise, because SE had decided earlier that day that it would log me out of everywhere. I was using firefox-138.0.1-1.fc42.x86_64 on cpe:/o:fedoraproject:fedora:42. Unfortunately, retrying permits the action, so I can't provide actionable debugging information anymore. 😔 Thanks all for the assistance thus far. Commented May 13 at 22:24

Yeah, it is a bit hit-and-miss with both browsers / cookies / cloudflare and Google Cloud Platform where or what went belly-up. Specially when it is a one-of / intermittent. It is good to have a post on this. Commented May 14 at 18:27

@mplungjan, I see that at SO, but not here. Is it the massively padded GUI? If so, I'm baffled that it displays, and allows me to click, the upvote button for my own comments, considering that it doesn't register them (thank gosh). Commented May 15 at 16:12

I can only reproduce this if I

  1. Log in.
  2. Open a page with a comment in tab A.
  3. Open a second tab (B)
  4. Log out from tab B.
  5. Go back to tab A and try to upvote a comment.

There might be other causes for this error message but if I do these steps, I get

You cannot vote for this comment.

If I upvote and retract, then I get a different message:

You've already undone your vote on this comment; you cannot upvote it again.
