This question relates to using Github Copilot in either VSCode or Visual Studio.

Although GitHub Copilot is a tool designed for programmers, I had a question (image for unprivileged users) closed as off-topic and was sent to ask on Super User. But my new question on Super User was also closed as off-topic.

What Stack Exchange site is appropriate for questions focused on programming with GitHub Copilot?

While the links to the closed questions might be helpful for a few users (e.g., 10k rep users can view deleted questions), the questions should be self-contained. "Github Copilot programming focused questions" is unclear. Please be specific about what you want to ask. Commented Aug 23 at 18:50

When a post has content that isn't rude, append its markdown & link to the version, don't use an image. Why are images of text, code and mathematical expressions discouraged? Commented Aug 24 at 2:48
  • If you find a StackExchange in the the end that was willing to take your Q, maybe quickly say which one it was. I would be curious. Commented Aug 25 at 8:58

As a rule, you cannot determine which Stack Exchange site is appropriate for asking a question by simply noting that it is "about" or "focused on" a specific tool, product, service etc.

What matters is what kind of question you are trying to ask about that thing.

In your case, the question was off topic at Stack Overflow because you weren't asking about how to make your IDE use GitHub Copilot properly, or about how to get the output from Copilot into your program, etc. Your question is about prompting the AI that Copilot provides, in order to get the result you want.

This is also off topic at Super User because you weren't asking about, for example, how to get the AI to see your prompt (i.e. something about "how to use your computer" that goes beyond what ordinary computer users have to worry about), but instead about what to put in the prompt.

For questions like this, please consider GenAI.

"instead about what to put in the prompt." No, OP isn't asking about prompt engineering. They're instead asking about how to clean the context. Commented Aug 23 at 19:51

To be fair, one of the things he mentioned trying was prompt engineering. Answering "what have you tried?" is not really supposed to be a question's death sentence, but it sometimes is. We're all human, after all. But it might have been read more favorably: if prompt engineering doesn't work, then what does? It's possible another programmer might know an answer. But the lack of easily-reproducible specifics in the problem report could make it difficult to keep on topic. Commented Aug 23 at 21:31

@DanGetz "if prompt engineering doesn't work, then what does" --> for example, a simple "clear history/chat" button like most AI assistants have. Commented Aug 23 at 22:19

Good to add: Before posting on a site read & meet its on-topic & post quality conditions per its help pages. Commented Aug 24 at 2:57

What Stack Exchange Site is Appropriate for Github Copilot Questions

In addition to jen's answer, the SU question that OP linked to about cleaning the GitHub Copilot context is also on-topic on SU (how to use a program) and SO (how to use a programming tool; SO even has a tag for GitHub Copilot). At least one close voter on SU indicated they thought the question was on-topic (but closed it for lacking details).

As a side note, I see the question was posted on reddit and was well-received, showing once again that Stack Exchange is not a friendly place to post good questions.
