After escaping from the lab where she was the subject of horrible scientific (and metaphysical) experiments all her life, Asterope Glass tried to build a life for herself. Lacking a real education and most people skills, she fell into reading tarot cards and later making astrological charts for people. But it never really satisfied her.

Then, in the midst of a drunken bender, she signed herself up to be a passenger on a colony ship headed to a distant planet, one where she might be able to escape the memories of her past. And even if she couldn't, her ability to read and chart the stars might prove useful to explorers on this new world.
