I am looking for software to edit or convert .fmd files created by ForeFlight.

ForeFlight has a checklist feature. I want to edit these either online or in a piece of software (instead of the app itself, because it is a pain). I am able to share the checklist to for example my email, where I found out the app creates a .fmd file.

Unfortunately I can't seem to open this file in any apps or converters. Maybe it is decrypted, I don't know.

Does anyone have suggestions on how I could possibly open this file?

If I open the .fmd file in notepad, I get something like this:

œñü‹z%{Øãï0rû$!¸ÅÞËæ³±¿UqÏ}9ŸØÑúyëkW×@2ŒÏhQ¾à‚CNOE»@d2\9ìLývÙôŸÃ$Õ1-q%m¶+eæÊË"Ì 7¨SS†7š¿c^ˆnÒ>l Í<Dõ,Øuš‘9[ BçÑà:ž¿-ºS<¬h®Ðe¤¢¾”ï—ô(4É"Ô–[Ä@õwé{v¹5ð9 [Âû¬÷ºe¤Ð{DµìÀPI‘pÆjT|Üý’ßm

P.S. I contacted ForeFlight support, and they say there is no such software, nor intention to make this software. So I'm relying on you.

  • I only recently got an iPad, just for Foreflight, so don't really know my way around this device. Where are the FMD files? Or how do I export/import these files? Commented Feb 6 at 16:18

I faced the same issue and reverse-engineered the ForeFlight checklist format when the developers refused to cooperate. I then implemented it in a very nice free online checklist editor by Rodrigo Damazio Bovendorp. The source code and a ready-to-use version are available on GitHub:

Keep in mind that this software is not officially supported and only superficially tested, so be sure to check the resulting checklists very carefully before using them. I have done my best to ensure correct conversion, but there may be bugs that result in items not being exported or displayed in a different way than intended.

  • Feel free to show me how you run checklists the next time you're at EDKA ;-) We have a nice restaurant with a lunch menu, definitely worth a visit! Seriously, if you have any problems, let us know and we'll try to help... I was in the same boat... or in the same plane :-) Commented Aug 31, 2024 at 17:38
