I have a programming assignment where I should compare the size of an earthquake magnitude to another. I'm supposed to use the Comparable interface and implement the compareTo method. The earthquake magnitudes are float values and the compareTo method should return an int type. So my code looks like this:

But I get an error saying that I "cannot invoke int compareTo() to the primitive type float".

  • Note: your title is not accurate, since you are able to cast float to int. You are not able to compare two ints using firstInt.compareTo(secondInt). Commented Mar 15, 2016 at 2:56

There is a built-in static convenience function Float.compare(float, float) for comparing primitive floats:

public int compareTo(EarthquakeMarker marker){ return Float.compare(this.getMagnitude(), marker.getMagnitude()); }

This worked. I wonder how everyone else is sollving the problem(the other people taking the course I mean).

As the message says, you cannot invoke methods to primitive types.

You should implement compareTo() by yourself because it is simple and I think creating objects such as Integer everytime compareTo() is called may cost too much.
