1

I have the following problem: I setup my printer EPSON stylus SX525WD via CUPS. To do so, I:

  1. Accessed the web interface at http://localhost:631/admin
  2. Clicked on "Add printer"
  3. Selected EPSON656CC1 (Epson Stylus SX525WD) (Epson Stylus SX525WD) at Discovered network printers
  4. This provides me with the following address: dnssd://EPSON656CC1%20(Epson%20Stylus%20SX525WD)._printer._tcp.local/
  5. When I finish the setup, the printer is listed under the Printers tab in the web interface, the status is Idle.

However, when I now print a page, the printer does nothing and the status changes to The printer is unreachable at this time.

Pinging the printer via ping 192.168.0.166 (I got the IP address by accessing the interface of the printer itself) results in the error message Destination Host Unreachable.

Running traceroute 192.168.0.166 returns 1 thinkpadt490 (192.168.0.109) 3033.085 ms !H 3033.044 ms !H 3033.027 ms !H.

lpstat -t returns the following:

So at the moment I'm quite confused why I can't reach the printer when I ping it, but the CUPS web interface finds it when using the automatic setup wizard when adding a new printer as well as running lpstat -t. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try next? I couldn't find anything similar in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS/Troubleshooting and I don't really understand what to make of the traceroute results.

Any help is much appreciated :)

Both CUPS and traceroute are telling you the same thing: the printer is unreachable by regular IP, i.e. there is no route from the local system to the IP address of the printer. But the DNSSD/Bonjour works, because it uses multicast addresses, which have their own rules separate from regular (unicast) IP addresses.

(In a nutshell, in a simple home network that has no "smart" switches with IGMP snooping functionality, all multicast traffic effectively turns into broadcasts within the local network segment.)

The CUPS printer URL dnssd://EPSON656CC1%20(Epson%20Stylus%20SX525WD)._printer._tcp.local/ is getting resolved to hostname EPSON656CC1.local (which will be further resolved into an IP address using Bonjour (multicast-DNS), and TCP port 515, which is the standard port for LPR/LPD print protocol:

Since you've found out the printer's IP address 192.168.0.166 from the printer itself, the failure to traceroute by IP indicates the problem is not in the Bonjour/mDNS resolution of the printer's hostname.

According to the traceroute output you quoted, your local system (thinkpadt490) has IP address 192.168.0.109. If the netmask in your network segment is 255.255.255.0, the Thinkpad and the printer are in the same network segment, and the printer should be directly connectable... which means there might be something in your Thinkpad that is blocking the outgoing connection. Perhaps there are (iptables/nftables) firewall rules, or something similar?

But if the netmask is 255.255.255.128 or greater, or if the Thinkpad and the printer have different netmasks configured, then the printer is in a different IP network segment, which might explain why the printer cannot be reached over unicast IP.

Your printer URI starts with DNSSD which, I believe, means that it is trying to use the Bonjour protocol to talk to the printer.

So, the next thing to try would be to verify that you have Bonjour installed and working on your system.
