I use an Android phone, and the default Phone app for calls. Every time I need to search for a contact, I input the first letters of the contact, and the phone or contact app lists the available matches. If the contact I am searching for appears, I select it and call the contact.

Next time round, when I enter the Phone app, it displays the last search and filtered list. I find this extremely annoying, as I have to reset the search bar to see all my concacts.

What is the logic behind this behaviour? Why does the app expect me to search or call the same contact again?

I don't get it. If I wished to call the contact again, I would go to the 'Recent' screen. Most likely, if the contact was searched for, it was because the contact is not in any of the 'Recent' or 'Favourite' or 'Starred' lists.

  • May I suggest to seek support for a solution through channels more related to Android and Google? Even if there is a solid UX explanation, it isn't going to help you. Commented Jan 21 at 14:36
  • @jazZRo thanks, but just ranting/curious, rather than looking for solutions. Am I missing something? Cheap UX design? Android app limitations on returing to last screen of curent app after moving to a different app (from Phone/Contacts to Call)? Commented Jan 22 at 11:56

@Ren you're right, I should have specified. It's 'Android One' 14, pretty much stock. Commented Jun 27 at 8:12

It does the same on iphone unless you completely close the phone app. It maintains the session till the app is completely closed, minimizing it won't do. That is the normal approach though. If I were on an e-commerce website and searched for something, I wouldn't want the list to disappear just because I interacted with one of the results. It is basically going back to the previous view. Commented Jun 30 at 7:41

@Ren, I believe you're on the right track. The contacts app and the phone app are separate, and it looks as if the contacts app has no idea that you used the results of the search, and therefore the search may be reset.. To follow up on your example, it is as if the basket app is separate from the purchase app, and has no idea you actually bought the item(s). The next time you access, you have the same items in the basket, and need to empty it manually. I suspect most users would prefer to find the basket empty, and search past orders for a duplicate purchase. Commented Jul 1 at 8:02
