I have two gmail accounts, let's call them A and B. B is shown as an add on to A. It has been like this for years. Now my desktop Linux system is correct, and my Android system is correct. But my windows 7 system has lost the linkage. I have tried to add it back, but that doesn't happen. It puts me in B, but doesn't add it to A. When I click on my bookmarked link to B I get A.

I have tried this in both Firefox and Chrome. I have cleared out my cache and cookies. I have restarted Windows 7. None of this helped.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is here and how to fix it?

  • What do you mean by "B is shown as an add on to A"? Commented Jun 10 at 23:51
  • When you click on your initial in the upper right corner, you get "manage account" and you can add an account to the list. B was on that list, but it is now gone. Further, the bookmark for B brings me to A. Commented Jun 11 at 1:08

On any Google app, click the initial / photo, then click Add account, and follow the on-screen instructions.

If the above doesn't work, please note that Windows 7 is no longer receiving updates from Microsoft. As of June 12, 2025, the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox support Windows 10 and later. Considering this, there are chances that some features doesn't work and that might explain why you can't add a secondary account.

  • I've been doing thaat for years, with the desired result. Now it isn't working on the Windows 7 machine. It will log me into the account, but it won't add it. Commented Jun 12 at 22:16
  • @brmath This might be related to Windows 7 no longer receiving updates. You should consider upgrading your computer to a newer version. Chrome supports Windows 10 or later. -- ref support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/7100626?hl=en Commented Jun 12 at 22:31
  • Yes, that is probably the answer. I'm reluctant to upgrade because I find windows 10 etc. confusing and hard to use. This is due to their many "improvements". But that may be where I'm headed. Commented Jun 16 at 1:12

As I understand it, the browser is showing your secondary email first.

Google does not regard any account as primary.

The solution is to log off all the accounts. Then log on with the primary one first. And the other one next.

As long as you dont clear the cache, it will remain this way.

All you need to do is click you avatar at the top right corner then click sign out. That will sign out all the accounts in your Google Chrome. Once that is done just simply sign into the account you wish to make default first.

  • I appreciate the clear instructions. But I am not using google chrome. I'm using firefox. Do I sign out of that the same way? Commented Jul 14 at 19:57
  • I tried signing out of both and then signing back in. The problem remains. Now no matter what I ask for I get my personal account. I can get into the other one by trying to add it to the personal account, which doesn't happen, but I get a chance to log in. I think. Anyway thanks for your help. Commented Aug 2 at 2:57
