Also known in German as VAG Rundschrift. Developed as a custom typeface for Volkswagen AG (Aktiengesellschaft, meaning “stock company”), who used it from 1978 until around 1992. Made generally available by Berthold in a single bold weight [Berthold 1982], by Adobe in 1989 [MyFonts], and by Linotype in four weights. [1989 specimen]
Originally commissioned from Wolf Rogosky and Gerd Hiepler [at the Düsseldorf branch of Swiss agency GGK], then reworked some years later by Bertel Schmitt and Manfred Schwarzer [still at GGK], and redesigned again by David Bristow and Gerry Barney, who worked on the Volkswagen corporate design at UK firm Sedley Place. [Ulrich] Other sources additionally credit Ian Hay, Kit Cooper, and Terence Griffin [MyFonts] – the other partners of Sedley Place.
The typeface was used for the Volkswagen and Audi Dealer Organization, and for all non-car related activities of Volkswagen, such as the V.A.G Bank and V.A.G Leasing. [Wikipedia]
