  1. “Gloving” is a dance style that involves wearing gloves with light-up fingertips.
According to Nwodo, gloving is a sport where people "wear light-up gloves and perform tricks with their hands."[1] It's most popular in EDM and rave culture. Participants known as “glovers” wear white gloves with multicolored LED lights in each fingertip, and they create intricate illusions and patterns by moving their hands and fingers to the rhythm of the music (see this TikTok by @sistermelx for reference).[2]
    • These “light shows” are often intimate performances between the glover and a small audience, or even one-on-one.
    • Gloving has been around since the 1990s, but it experienced a surge in popularity in the 2020s when members of the community started posting videos to social media.
    • For example, this 2020 TikTok by @matt__kalevik racked up 79.2 million views and 10.3 million likes!
    • Although gloving is a very real art form with dedicated performers, it also ended up becoming a meme on TikTok in late 2025, which we’ll go over below.

How “Gloving” Became a Meme

  1. Gloving became a meme thanks to its popularity on TikTok.
The meme started in late 2025, when people who were unfamiliar with gloving started getting videos about it on their TikTok For You pages. Because this dance style may seem a little strange to those outside the EDM or rave scenes, these people started to joke about it being “cringey,” and they also poked fun at how committed glovers seemed to be to their hobby.[3] This evolved into comedic posts pretending that gloving is way more intense than it is, and even depicting it as a life-or-death sport.
    • Nwodo says that gloving has “gone viral on TikTok because of its absurdity, leading to a lot of people making fun of it. However, the actual gloving scene is very organized. It has international competitions, organizations, and a Hall of Fame.”[4]
    • Take this viral post by @reosmells, for example. It shows someone gloving, with text on the screen that reads, “You’ll be celebrating Christmas with your f***ing family, I’ll be gloving till my finger f***ing bleed, we are not the f***ing same.”
    • In response to the jokes and memes, some members of the gloving community understandably reacted with defensiveness, which only added fuel to the fire.

What is “degloving”?

  1. “Degloving” is a made-up punishment for disrespecting the gloving community.
As the gloving meme took off, TikTok users started to make comedic posts about “degloving,” a fictional punishment that involves getting your gloves taken away if you end up on the gloving community’s bad side. The posts were super ominous and vague, which added to the original joke about gloving being an incredibly intense and cutthroat sport.
    • For example, in this TikTok by @citiesbydiana, the user explains her (fictional) experience of being “degloved” for doing a “forbidden move,” saying she was banned from gloving for life and all digital evidence of her gloving career was erased.
    • This viral post by @padresbiggestfan shows someone gloving with text on the screen that reads, “Me (age 32) when my mom says I need to take a shower, so I just deglove our whole bloodline.”
    • Nwodo says the term can also mean something more sinister: “Degloving is actually a gory medical condition that refers to the skin being completely removed from a part of your body, most commonly … the hands.”[5]
    • Nwodo explains that the medical term degloving “actually has nothing to do with gloving in general. However, because it mentions the word gloving, it is commonly associated with the trend. This has led many people to make the joke that if they lose in gloving, they will be degloved.”[6]
    • Nwodo says the degloving joke "is also commonly associated with the shocked ishowspeed face." He further explains the meme in these videos posted to his TikTok channel @hyperstrides: Gloving Explained and Degloved Explained.[7]
