TL;DR: With two Android phones, how do I get arrival & departure location sharing notifications on my backup device, instead of the primary device?

I have a primary and a backup Android phone. Recently, the primary one developed an issue with the display, rendering it mostly unusable, except with screen projection utilities (e.g. AirDroid and scrcpy). As a result, I switched to using the backup phone.

Over the last couple of days, I noticed that Google Maps was still sending notifications of arrival & departure (notification channel: Google location sharing (friends)) to my now unusable primary device. After searching the internet, I found this answer, which essentially requires me to sign out of my Google account on the primary phone. This solution is untenable for me, as I intend to repair and return to using the primary device in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, however, I still want to receive notifications on the backup device. How do I achieve this?

Here are the things I've tried which didn't yield the expected result:

  • Fully disabled location sharing on the primary phone
  • Disabled all Google Maps notifications on the primary phone
  • Cleared data and disabled Google maps on the primary phone
  • Disabled & re-enabled location sharing on the backup phone

I don't really understand why your question was downvoted; indeed, I have now actually upvoted it. It's on topic, relevant, and demonstrates prior research before asking - which are the general criteria expected of a good question. The only thing I edited about your question was the title (changed primary to secondary, to reflect what you were asking) - besides that, it looks like a fair and reasonable question. Downvote is not mine. But the question is not clear. What is meant by primary and secondary? Are they both using the same Google account? Why is it a problem signing out until the phone is fixed? Commented Jul 12 at 5:00
  • @RohitGupta. Primary is the main device; secondary is a backup device. The post makes it obvious that the two are signed in to the same Google account. Signing out of the Google account on an Android device uninstalls all Play Store apps, and essentially resets the device. It therefore doesn't make sense, in many cases, to log out, only to log back in and go through the whole setup and configuration process in just a few days/weeks. Commented Jul 17 at 12:29

@AlexEssilfie To my knowledge signing out of a Google account does not uninstall any app. They just stay as they are with all data. Only some paid apps may refuse to work afterwards. Only when you perform a factory reset all apps are deleted. Commented Jul 17 at 17:25

Try clearing all data for the Google Maps app on the the phone that is not showing location sharing notifications (your backup phone). Open the Google Maps app and verify your settings then verify notifications are enabled for the app. Location sharing notifications should work after that.

I had the same issue after transferring apps to a new phone and that fixed it for me.

You already have the answer

for the moment, only way i know to fix this is to log out of google account on tablet. From support.google

I dont believe that logging out of the Google account uninstalls all apps. However if you are worried about it,

  1. Create another Google account. They are free
  2. Log into that as well
  3. Then switch to the new account. I do this all the time, between 4 accounts, for a different reason. Nothing gets removed.
