When you update an image that is already contained in the file gallery (via the 'upload new version' property) you have the choice of having it resized or not. Just like with any image upload.
But unlike a regular upload, you don't have the actual choice: Regardless of whether you uncheck the option "Use Gallery default resize settings for images (No resize)" and set max width and height to 0, which means "no limits" or whether you leave it checked and default to "no resize", the uploaded image _will_ be resized to the exact dimensions of the original image.
This means you cannot update with a higher resolution.
The size of the image, however, indicates that the image does not get resized upon upload, but rather upon display.
