Nuclear Birds in the Everglades - Jan 2017

Nuclear Birds in the Everglades provides a concise narrative and photographic history of the 2nd/52nd from 1959 through 1983. It begins with a brief history of the beginnings of the Cold War followed by the events that dovetailed into the Cuban Missile Crisis including the attack on the Moncado Barracks, the revolution and overthrow of the Cuban government, America's sanctions against Castro's Cuba, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and Russia's installation of ICBMs in Cuba. America's response brings Army units that have trained and prepared for a rapid-response to anywhere in the world within 72 hours. These units included the Army's 82nd and 101st Airborne units, the 1st Armored Division and a Marine division to south Florida for an invasion of Cuba. Additionally, the 2nd Nike Hercules Missile Battalion and two HAWK missile battalions create an air defense network to defend against nuclear-capable Russian IL28 Beagle bombers from Cuba. As President Kennedy isolates Cuba from the rest of the world as he tightens the noose with a naval blockade, Russia stands down and removes its ICBMs. Military tacticians make the decision is made to keep Army air defense missiles in south Florida for an undetermined period. Now, temporary becomes permanent but with many obstacles including heat, humidity, non-stop mosquitoes, lack of electricity and running water. In a battery-by-battery chapter, it chronicles the obstacles overcome by the men and their missiles and the many positive memories for over 3000 soldiers who were stationed there between 1962 and 1979. It includes the relocation back to Ft. Bliss before being deactivated in 1983. The unit history is a means of recalling long forgotten events and rekindling ties of comradeship. Maybe 10 years ago, Tim Gatto sent a dim hard-to-read carbon paper manuscript to me. The letters were difficult to resolve, but it was a rolliking tale. I OCRed it, mostly corrected the OCRed text, making it *much* easier to read. I paid Tim $10 for permission to post it on this web site. About 5 years ago, Tim sent me the $10 back, saying he had a potential buyer, and to remove his "novel" from my web site. His first deal fell through - but here now is the story - in very readable form! I love it - even though my earlier "drug" experience on a Chicago Nike site was limited to one guy sneaking in cherry brandy in a small cough syrup bottle.

Recommended by Colonel Stephen P. Moeller as "One of the finest books written about the technological and experimentation underpinnings of all of the Nike systems ...". He found a copy in a used book store near a college.


I (Ed Thelen) got a copy via an inter-library loan with in the county library system. This book is really a "must" for 1925-1975 radar (naval, anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic missile), acoustics (sonar), gun direct directing analog computers, communications (various forms of multiplexing - a number of phone connections on one wire) and a host of other developments.

Surprising to me was the large role the Bell system had played in the Nike system. There were indeed Western Electric stickers on most of the Nike equipment and the schematics had Western Electric logos (Western Electric was the "manufacturing arm" of the Bell System). But I had no idea while in the Army that Bell Labs had designed the Nike Fire Control System, nor that Bell labs started into radar in 1937 at the request of the Navy. Bell Labs did a great deal of the (British invented) magnetron development and production for the U.S. in World War II. Also during World War II Bell Labs played a major role in in radar, radar surveillance and tracking systems, and radar directed computers.

The historical sequence shows the evolution from the first U.S. production naval radars (being installed in naval vessels at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack) through the M-9 anti-aircraft gun directing system of V-1 and mid WWII fame, through the M-33 gun directing system which supplied many of the components for the Nike missile fire control system, through the Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules programs, and into Nike Zeus.

I had heard that the Nike Ajax acquisition radar was the M-33 radar of the M-33 anti-aircraft gun directing system, but was surprised to see that the Nike operator's radar scopes and controls looked identical to the M-33 system also. The M-33 analog computer operational amplifiers "Direct Coupled" Amplifier" looked the same as the Nike. (From Doyle Piland dpiland@zianet.com "These amplifiers not only looked the same for the Nike and M-33 systems, there were the same. All the way down to the part/stock number.") The evolution/adaptation from system to system was amazing and enlightening to me.

It gave factual detail to many folk tales that I had heard about pre-magnetron radar transmitters. It is a wonderful (full of wonders) book giving the historical background to World War II activities, the complex interactions between governments (U.S. & British) and industry (Bell, G.E., etc.) and educational institutions (MIT, et. al.). In other words. an overview of the "military/industrial complex" that helped us win World War II. It gives a broad view of the research, development, preparation for user training, manufacturing, and maintenance of several important sequences of defense related systems.

Well written, easy to read, 757 pages including a good bibliography and index.

" I have some pages of an Historical Monograph made by the US army Ordnanace Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, AL from 1962 which chronicles the "Development, Production, and Deployment of the Nike Ajax Guided Missile System 1945-1959.) I have about 10 pages photocopied from this document, (200+ pages long) and all I wanted were the sections concerning real estate issues, public opposition and initial deployment. I looked at this while at the Historical Office of the US Army in Downtown Washington, DC. It was interesting as it contained all the information during the development of the system such as information on what happened during test firings; Did it fly, did it obey radio signals, if reached the target drone, etc., etc., etc. I also visited the Army Corps of Engineers HQ in Alexandria, VA which provided other documentation like some site layouts etc. "

(Ed's comment) An excellent non-juvenile book that leads the non-technical interested reader into radar. I found it in some local libraries. The beginning is simple and topics carefully get more advanced. A great teaching book for practical understanding and results! Later chapters give an understanding of advances in radar mapping as used in the Venus probes.

An Illustrated Guide To The Techniques And Equipment Of Electronic Warfare by Doug Richardson
A book recommended by Aidan Fabius via newsgroup sci.military.naval and Patrick Tufts, recommends "excellent book on the subject called "An Illustrated Guide To The Techniques And Equipment Of Electronic Warfare" by Doug Richardson (An ARCO Military Book) which has tons of info on that kind of thing. My copy is pretty dated (1985) but there's probably a newer version of it by now. There's about 20 pages on different jamming techniques and a really good introduction explaining how radar works and all the different types of radar. The book has plenty of pictures and diagrams, and is really easy to understand. I highly recommend it." Patrick Tufts then found an almost local (for me) copy the book via Advanced Book Exchange.

A collection of papers covering the time span 1946 to 1978. Three types of papers: discussion, analysis, and hardware. Many PPI and A scope images of examples of various types of jamming and the results of using various methods of countering the types of jamming. Block diagrams, circuits, theory, mathematics, statistics, references to Soviet publications, ... . There is a 16 page "Master Electronic Warfare Glossary" that helps you understand some the specialized technical words.

Five hundred forty six pages of various highly technical authors trying to get as much information as possible into the few pages of each paper. An extensive bibliography. I would guess that it would take a summer for a technical person to get a reasonable overview of this book, bring your reading glasses and magnifier. Much more than most of us will ever want to know or be able to understand about this subject. Awe inspiring, just brousing the book brings a sense of wonder and humility.

and reports " Hardcover, 476 pages, first printed in September of 1971, it gives basic to intermediate theory of operation of radar systems. There are many references to the Nike system, some theory of operation and pictures of Nike equipment and personnel (anybody recognize anyone?) from the Fort Bliss Air Defense Center. While not Nike intensive (the majority of it is of other systems), it gives a good background into modern radar of the era.

I could not find it in any local library. Amazon reports "hard to find".

"Blazing Skies, From Ajax to Zeus"

This is a biography of a WWII "jar-head" U.S.Marine who later (saw the light and) joined the U.S.Army and the beginning of the Nike AJAX program, and stayed into the ZEUS phase. Frankly, "I couldn't put the book down" and read it straight through into the dawn.

Jack Emry describes his Marine training in good detail - you get the feeling. He goes to the Pacific War and has adventures. Comes home and gets bumped around in civilian life, Border Patrol yet. Enlists into the Army and gets Nike technical training. Goes to a Seattle site, then later does technical, documentation, Operational Readiness Testing, evaluation of things - has tours including Germany and Kwajalein. Bumps into the good and bad of Army life.

The author has an amazing memory for names - the book is peppered with names of people involved with the Nike program. I think it is also a great sociological study of the military (or probably any large organization). This is not a techie book - this is a book about life.
