There’s a strange phenomenon where the gear object becomes visible when a glass surface is placed over it, but appears transparent when uncovered (as shown in the red-circled area). Interestingly, the gear also becomes partially visible and turns black when it intersects with another object, as seen with the black gear. The glass material uses the default Glass BSDF shader with default settings, and the gear material is also a default shader. So there are no altered material settings, all is default. The normals of the gear are correct, and it already behaved this weird way immediately after being added as a new object.

I also did not make changes to any ray visibility settings. I just added a new gear with nothing changed.

Oops, I found the problem. I accidentally added the object while the collection with the Indirect Only setting enabled was selected, so the gear ended up in that collection and inherited the setting that made it invisible. So all I did was move the gear object out of that collection.

  • $\begingroup$ You see, as I told you on your last question - the Indirect Only for a collection is working like disabling Camera visibility for an object. 😉 Would have been easy to miss for since your screenshots do not show the Outliner, so it's good you found it yourself. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 18 at 8:53
