While writing this question I stumbled with an (apparently) bald error message. Hovering the mouse over the read question mark does not add info.

The image in question is here. It is a 302 kB JPG file, from a digital scan. The error persisted after conversion of the file to PNG. I have no error uploading different images.

Any hint on a possible cause for this problem?

    Yes! The issue is fixed! I am sorry I bumped up the question... I just rolled back an edit to the question by a third party that did not make sense to me. Commented Apr 4 at 9:38

The upload worked for me on the first try using Chrome + Windows 11: https://i.sstatic.net/TMxKY2jJ.jpg. However, from time to time, image uploads do fail. A few retries typically resolve the issue.
