Note: this is not a duplicate of Error uploading a specific image, even after format conversion or "An error occurred when uploading the image:" for a large image, since I can upload these other two images without any issues (I've just tried now).

I try to upload this image to SE, but get an error:

An error occurred when uploading the image:

enter image description here

Re-trying doesn't work. Tested on MSE and AU, with Chrome+Windows.

    I'm genuinely sorry if I've misunderstood, but how isn't this a duplicate? Commented Apr 8 at 22:27

    @security_paranoid It's a different image that's failing to upload: the previous images are uploading fine. Commented Apr 8 at 22:30

    This question is similar to: "An error occurred when uploading the image:" for a large image. If you believe it’s different, please edit the question, make it clear how it’s different and/or how the answers on that question are not helpful for your problem. Commented Apr 8 at 22:40

    @StarshipRemembersShadow "this is not a duplicate of meta.stackexchange.com/q/407871/178179 or meta.stackexchange.com/q/407980/178179, since I can upload these other two images without any issues (I've just tried now)." What's unclear about it? Commented Apr 8 at 23:27

    Well they are the exact same error with the same trigger...whats not a dupe Commented Apr 8 at 23:28
  • @StarshipRemembersShadow not the same trigger because different images Commented Apr 8 at 23:40

    Simply finding another image that triggers the exact same error doesn't distinguish the questions sufficiently. I could also find an image that would trigger this error. But would be a duplicate for me to open a third meta question "An error occurred when uploading the image:" for another big image. A better approach is to revisit the first question to explain that it isn't actually resolved. Commented Apr 8 at 23:54

    @jen "An error occurred when uploading the image" is a generic error message. meta.stackexchange.com/q/407871/178179 and meta.stackexchange.com/q/407980/178179 both caused that error message, but were not duplicate. Anyway let's see what Troy says: meta.stackexchange.com/a/407994/178179 or Jen maybe you could try to find another image causing the issue, that could help narrow down the problem. I notice many comments but 0 help. Commented Apr 8 at 23:59
  • @jen depends on the findings. Eg currently I don't know if pb is size or bmp content or something else. I didn't have the time to do more testing. If pb is size then I agree it could be a dupe eg if Troy increased by 10 MB instead of MiB. Commented Apr 9 at 0:14
  • @jen I did another test, I think Troy simply didn't increase size enough. I'll let him or others confirm. Commented Apr 9 at 0:23

    @jen "Simply finding another image that triggers the exact same error doesn't distinguish the questions sufficiently" it does when the error that is triggered is supposed to be fixed. Both reported as fixed and reproduced as fixed. The logical conclusion is that it's a different problem that needs fixing. Unless your claim that the previous report was both 1. was never fixed 2. suddenly is consistently not reproducible when it was previously consistently reproducible. Commented Apr 9 at 4:58

    When saving the image as a new BMP 24-bit file, this 1x1 pixel image has a much smaller file size and uploads without issues. This raises the question of whether the error is triggered by the file size itself or by the additional data embedded in the original image. Could you provide insight into how the image's size was artificially increased? This information may help identify the underlying problem. Commented Apr 9 at 13:59

This should be fixed now. A little miscommunication between myself and our SRE team working on the GCP migration.

10MiB != 10MB
