Do I understand the rules correctly if I say that a creature with long appendages, like a dragon's neck, doesn't grow proportionally when its size increases?

I'll use the serpopard as an example since its flavour texts says its neck is two times the length of its body, making the example very obvious, but it works the same for any other creature with less absurd proportions.

A medium serpopard occupies 5 feet and his neck allows him to hit creatures 15 feet away. If he becomes large the proportion become 10/15 (not 20 because he is a quadruped), if he is huge then it's 15/20, the bigger he gets the shorter the neck becomes in proportion to his body.

Did I interpret the rules correctly? I always thought size increases were additions to the base numbers but this is so stupid that it made me question if I didn't apply them wrong the whole time while instead they work more similarly to the reach weapon property, that it's not just an increase to the reach but instead a multiplier to your normal reach based on size.

This cannot possibly be RAI, I cannot even imagine them answering a FAQ about the topiç with "Yes, the serpopard neck is intended to become shorter the bigger he gets".

Edit: i thought about it a little more and the situation is even worse.

The serpopard has a 15 feet reach with his bite due to his neck but if you give him a gore attack his reach will still be 5 feet with his horns, even tho they should also have a 15 feet reach.

Did I miss a fundamental rule? Cause this situation is more common than I thought.

Will I break the game balance if I fix it in my games?

  • \$\begingroup\$ @Gregorius i thought it was well known that a reach weapon doubles your natural reach while a whip/sarissa triple it based on size. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Jul 30 at 11:36
