Over the summer I had to replace my laptop and TeX-system:
- MikTeX 25.4
- WinEdt 10.2
- TeXworks 0.6.10
With yet another semester starting the following (somewhat sidesteppable) problem has become more annoying.
My workflow within WinEdt uses the buttons LaTeX (TeX to DVI), dvips (DVI to PS), ps2pdf (ps to PDF). In my previous system (same version of WinEdt, IIRC MikTeX also, but I'm not totally sure, possibly different PDF previewer??) whenever I reproduced a new version of my document, it would also be automatically refreshed in the preview window (after due time).
IIRC it was either about adding a command switch (can be done within WinEdt), or using a different previewer. AcroRd32 wants to be used, but is a non-option, as it completely blocks updates to an open PDF file. TeXWorks won't block the update, but won't reload/refresh it. It shows a completely grey page.
Currently I simply close the previewer before rerunning ps2pdf, but it is a bit annoying to have to remember that, and slows down the workflow anyway. If I try to open that file from the TeXworks menu, nothing happens (the same grey page is shown).
I found this very similar question, but that is five years old and about a different version of TeXworks. Did this issue reappear in a later version?
Is there an option for TeXWorks that governs this behavior? Recommendations for other previewers. I usually do not do anything fancy with the previewer (like measure displacements of characters and such), but I would like refreshability.
