This official feed from the Google Workspace team provides essential information about new features and improvements for Google Workspace customers.

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we launched Gemini in Google Classroom to help educators save time on planning and create more engaging lessons. In the coming weeks, we’re expanding Gemini in Classroom to students in higher education who are 18 years of age and older to help them study and learn.

From a central destination in Google Classroom, students will be able to access learning tools available with Gemini for Education, a no-cost version of the Gemini app built for educational institutions where you get expanded access to our most capable AI model and data isn’t reviewed by humans or used to train AI models.

Students will be able to

  • Learn about a topic: Get on-demand support and explanations of challenging concepts or step-by-step guidance with Guided Learning.
  • Take a quiz: test your knowledge with personalized practice quizzes based on specific topics or class materials to help prepare for exams.
  • Practice with flashcards: Easily transform notes and class materials into custom digital flashcards for quick review.
  • Create a study guide: Make a study guide about a certain topic, or upload class notes and materials for more personalized resources.

Meeting participants can now configure the length of their meeting notes when using the "take notes for me" feature in Google Meet. By selecting the "Longer" option from the "Notes Length" menu, you can generate notes that are roughly twice as long as the standard document to help capture all the important details. Turn on longer notes for technical discussions, complex project meetings, or any session where every detail is critical.

What’s happening

We’re introducing AI-powered audio overviews for PDFs in Google Drive.

This new Gemini for Google Workspace feature allows your users to instantly convert long, text-heavy PDFs—such as industry reports, contracts, or lengthy meeting transcripts—into a conversational, podcast-style audio summary. With just one click, a new audio file is saved directly to their Drive. This feature is powered by the same underlying technology as NotebookLM’s popular Audio Overview feature.

Add GIF

In today's fast-paced environment, dedicating time to read long documents can be a significant challenge. Audio overviews solve this by allowing users to absorb critical information while they are multitasking. Users can listen to the summaries from anywhere they can access their Drive files, whether they’re commuting, working out, or doing chores.

This feature can help your users:

  • Boost efficiency by allowing users to quickly grasp the main points of a long document in a two- to 10-minute audio summary,
  • Improve accessibility by providing an alternative format for consuming content, and
  • Enhance preparation by making it easier to quickly review materials before meetings or client presentations.
Once the audio overview is generated on a desktop, the user receives an email notification that the file is ready. The audio file is automatically saved to a new "Audio overviews" folder in their Drive, which they can then access from any mobile or desktop device.

Please note: At launch, this feature supports English-language PDFs only.

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we announced a series of changes to AI classification for Google Drive, including a revamped user interface, an on-demand model training process, and support for multiple custom-trained models. Today, we’re excited to share the next step in the product’s evolution: Gemini-based models for data classification, now available in closed beta.

This feature leverages Gemini models to apply data classification labels to files in Google Drive. To date, AI classification requires admins to identify and manually label training files for the AI model to learn the types of data associated with each data classification level. With this new capability, Gemini models offers admins another method to set up AI classification by eliminating the need for manual model training, replacing the process with administrator-defined instructions or prompts.

Gemini models interpret prompts, evaluate files, and apply appropriate data classification labels based on the provided instructions. For files labeled by Gemini, editors and owners on those files with the appropriate label permissions will have the opportunity to review and accept or modify the automatically applied label.

Administrators maintain full control.

Administrators maintain full control. They select the label, provide instructions via a prompt, and scope the audience whose files are being evaluated. Audit logs capture when files are labeled or any user acceptance or modification of a Gemini-applied label occurs.

Why it matters

Data classification is a critical activity for organizations that are conscious about data protection, compliance, and reporting. However, data classification can also be challenging to put into practice, particularly when it comes to accurately classifying files at scale.  Using AI for data classification aims to address this problem by using a model’s ability to reason to achieve a high degree of data classification accuracy, at scale.

  • Admins:  For customers interested in testing, we kindly ask that you share your interest by filling out this form
    • Please note – during this phase of product validation, enrollment will be limited. Our intent is to gradually onboard customers leading up to an Open Beta.
    • Ideal closed-beta participants will be organizations with existing data classification programs, who have the capacity to actively test the models and are willing to engage with the Workspace product team to provide direct feedback on their experience.
    • If you are selected for the Closed Beta, you will receive an email detailing specific onboarding instructions.
  • End users: There is no end user setting for this feature.

What’s changing

We’re expanding the capabilities of Gemini’s Deep Research feature by integrating it with your Google Workspace apps. This update allows Deep Research to seamlessly gather information from your content in Gmail, Chat, and Drive - including Slides, Sheets and Docs files - in addition to the web, to create a more comprehensive and personalized report.

Previously, users had to manually upload individual files from Drive to supplement their Deep Research. Now, Deep Research can pull securely from your Workspace content, including emails and even chats, informing reports with relevant context.

This update helps end users, including students, educators and those in small businesses, to do their best work by making research more efficient and context-aware. Your users can now integrate information directly from:

  • Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and PDFs in Drive, including non-Google files
  • Context from emails in Gmail
  • Information from Chat messages
Example use cases for end users:

  • Business planning: Users can ask Deep Research to kickstart analysis for a new product using team documents, build out a competitor report referencing internal strategy memos and communications, or help onboard onto a new project quickly after analyzing documents, emails, and chat history.
  • Project catch-up: Get quickly caught up on an in-progress project by asking, "Catch me up on my <some project you have docs, chats, emails about. e.g., my remodeling project>. What are some decisions I need to make, and for each, can you research potential options".
  • Academic research: Students and faculty can ask Deep Research to review their existing notes and research papers on a topic and combine that with web research to pull together an insightful report that includes insights from their own documents.

What’s changing

We’re excited to announce source-grounded writing help in Google Docs. Gemini will automatically curate a list of sources linked in your document and you can choose to ask it to only pull details from those sources when providing writing assistance via the side panel. This will keep suggestions focused and grounded in trusted content. With source-grounded writing help you can:

  • Create contextual and reliable output from Gemini
  • Query available knowledge on a topic, getting accurate answers that are tailored to your needs

Using this trusted and relevant content can help ensure you’re using exactly the context you need — no guesswork or tab switching required.

Additionally, this launch can help save users time. All users have to do is link files in their document, which many users already do today, and then select "Document links" to ground on those files.

Previously, users would have to remember and individually add files in the prompt field to ground Gemini in them. Adding files individually is still available for users that want to ground on files that are not linked in the document. However, this launch will make it quicker and easier for users that have already linked the relevant files in the doc to ground Gemini on that information, and can help ensure important sources are not left out.

What’s changing

Starting today, educators will be able to use Gemini to create their own stories with Read Along in Classroom, in addition to the existing ability to upload their own content into Read Along as part of the assignment creation process

Now, with the help of Gemini, educators have an enhanced ability to further customize their students’ experience and differentiate their instruction by generating content specific to students’ needs. In addition, generating content expands the use of Read Along to older students, for example, an educator can ask Gemini to generate a story on a topic from a science class at a reading level that is more appropriate for the learner.

From the assignment creation screen, open Read Along, and select “Generate.” From there you select a target grade for the story, add in a topic or plot, list any additional details like length of the story or learning goals, and add any keywords you want in the story and click “Generate Story”. Gemini will create a story that can be reviewed and further edited by the educator, and then assigned to students.

What’s changing

Over the last year, we’ve brought the capabilities of Gemini to Google Classroom to support new ways of teaching and learning. A few months ago, we expanded Gemini in Classroom to help educators use AI for their common teaching tasks. Today, we’re making it possible for educators to use Google’s NotebookLM and Gems to create teacher-led AI experiences for students of all ages in Google Classroom.

Now, educators can instantly create interactive AI learning experiences for students using NotebookLM and Gems right from Google Classroom – and using their class materials. They can then be assigned to students for extra practice, support, and learning opportunities:

  • Using NotebookLM, educators can select resources from their class to instantly create an interactive study guide and other learning aids like podcast-style audio overviews, mind maps, and more – grounded only in the materials educators upload. See examples

  • Educators can create a Gem, which is a custom version of Gemini, for their students to interact with. Teachers can select class materials to inform a new Gem, whether they create one from scratch or select one of the templates in Classroom (Study partner, Quiz me, Brainstorm partner, or Real-world connector). Because Gemini is informed by learning science research through LearnLM, educators’ Gems will lean into best-in-practice pedagogical behaviour as students interact with them – helping students to better understand concepts and test their knowledge, rather than just give them the answer. See examples for educators

Once created, students will be able to access the teacher-created notebook or Gem on their Classwork page in Classroom, either as a “Class learning resource” at the top of the page, or as part of an assignment.

Who’s impacted

Update (Oct 10, 2025): This article has been updated due to a change in the rollout timing for Scheduled Release domains. Previously, we expected rollout to Scheduled release to start on October 7, 2025. Now, we expect rollout to start on October 14, 2025.

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we announced the first iteration of the ability to turn existing Google Slides content into engaging videos using Google Vids. Now, we’re expanding that functionality to include Gemini-generated scripts, AI voiceovers, and background music. This makes it easier and faster to transform your existing content into a shareable, engaging video.

Just like before, open vids.new > choose “Convert Slides” > select the Slides presentation you'd like to use, and choose the specific slides you want to import. To use the new Gemini features, ensure the “Include AI voiceover, script, and background music” toggle is enabled.

Vids will then create scenes from each slide and insert scripts, voiceovers and background music. You can make additional edits, such as adding animations to your objects or generating AI video clips with Veo 3.

Getting started

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
  • End users:
    • When creating a new Vid, access this feature by selecting the Convert Slides option.
    • For existing Vids, you can access this feature by going to the File menu > Convert slides.

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we made it easier to generate charts and insights using Gemini in Google Sheets. Building on that momentum, we’re excited to announce a significant enhancement to formula generation in Gemini for Sheets. Specifically, we've upgraded Gemini to include detailed natural language formula explanations, provide formula error explanation and self-correction, and to output multiple formula options.

With these updates, Gemini can provide a full, reasoned response, making formula generation smarter and more resilient, and helping users to understand the formulas and calculations happening in their sheets.

1. Detailed natural language formula explanations:
Complex formulas can now be returned with step-by-step explanations of how they work. This improves user understanding and builds trust, making it easier to learn and adapt formulas for future use. If Gemini doesn’t provide an explanation as part of the response, you can always ask in your next query how the generated formula works.

2. Error explanation and self-correction:
Gemini can now explain why a formula failed (e.g., "the date in A1 is formatted as text") and, in a follow-up turn, use the error message to generate a corrected formula that solves the underlying issue.

3. Multiple formula options:
For more complex tasks or when there are several ways to achieve a result, Gemini can now provide multiple formulas.

Getting started

  • Admins: To access Gemini in Workspace apps, users need to have smart features and personalization turned on. Admins can turn on the personalization setting for their users in the Admin console.
