Partager les souvenirs, les impressions, les rencontres, les odeurs, les couleurs d'un voyage en Afrique de l'Ouest, ne serait-ce que dans une infime partie de celle-ci (Bénin et Mali) n'est pas une mince affaire. C'est pourtant  l'idée de cette émission, de cette carte postale sonore ramenée d'une série de séjours dans les villes de Cotonou, Ouidah, Porto-Novo et Gran Popo au Bénin, Bamako et Ségou au Mali. 

Une série de séjours poly-rythmés par des rencontres inattendues, drôles, parfois fulgurantes...des discussions futiles, d'autres sérieuses, d'autres encore alcoolisées, toutes presque toujours improbables. Vous l'aurez compris, ma carte de visite était évidemment celle de la musique. La musique d'une époque tout à fait particulière où l'Afrique décolonise sa culture, sa conscience, ses institutions (je sais, il reste encore beaucoup de boulot) et se cherche, et se retrouve une nouvelle identité en dépoussiérant sa tradition, son folklore, en grattant ceux des diasporas afro-américaines, afro-cubaines, afro-brésiliennes...

J'ai essayé d'illustrer ce dialogue par des morceaux tirés de vieilles galettes, toujours dans leur intégralité, où enregistrés en live sur place et qui me semblaient apporter de la valeur ajoutée à la discussion. Le format de l'émission, des dialogues comme des morceaux pourra surprendre, mais après tout on s'en fout....

 You are not a country, Africa, you are a concept. You are not a concept, Africa, you are glimpse of infinity... Georges N'Gal, Ghaneen poet and Diplomat.

Sharing memories, impressions, encounters, smells and colours after travelling to West Africa, even if only to an infinitesimal part of it (Benin and Mali) is not an easy thing to do. It is, however, the whole idea of this program, a kind of musical postcard brought back from a number of visits to Cotonou, Ouidah, Porto-Novo and Gran Popo in Benin and Bamako and Segou in Mali. All the visits were rhythmed by unexpected encounters, some funny and some dazzling, by conversations and discussions that were trivial, very serious and some highly alcoholised but almost all totally unlikely. Of course you will have understood - my visiting card was music. Not any music but music from a very particular period when Africa was decolonising its culture, its conscience, its institutions (I know, there's still a lot to be done) and was looking at itself and found a new identity by modernising its traditions and folklore after scratching at those of the Afro-American, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian diasporas.   I have tried to illustrate this dialogue with unabridged extracts from old vinyls or live recordings. The style of the program may surprise some - music and dialogues - but finally, who cares ?

Ablo Diarra

At the end of this edition of Soul Descarga, you'll be able to hear an interview and a song of Ablo Diarra. Ablo is the lead singer of "Les Balanzans de Ségou", a Bambara Band from this great town of Mali. He's the son of Papus Gaoussou Diarra, whom used to play with the great "Super Biton de Ségou". On the video, it's them in "Le Festival sur le Niger", one of the most famous festival in the Sahel area. If everything goes right, we (the Palmwine Records crew) will be able to make them come in Lyon, France, for a concert in "Les Nuits Sonores" (june 2011). The song they're playing in the video is kind of a cover from Muddy Waters "Mannish boy". Anna Fillippi wrote the text of the song wich talk about Niger djélis (griots) and Mississippi Djélis (bluesman)...Thanks to her I was able to do this interview and to make a live album for them with my nagra recorder... Hope for them that they will encounter succes...



A la fin de l'émission, vous pourrez entendre une interview et un petit morceau live d'Ablo Diarra, le chanteur et leader des Balanzans de Ségou, un orchestre dans la plus pure tradition Bambara. Ablo est le fils de Papus Gaoussou Diarra, un ancien sociétaire du fameux "Super Biton de Ségou". Sur la vidéo au dessus, vous pouvez voir les Balanzans en live au "Festival sur le Niger", l'un des plus fameux festoch de l'air Sahélienne, ils avaient été sélectionné pour le tremplin découverte. Depuis le groupe connait son petit succès au Mali après avoir remporté un concours de la télévision nationale. Si tout se passe bien, il y a de bonnes chances qu'avec l'équipe de Palmwine Records on arrive à les faire venir aux Nuits Sonores de Lyon en juin 2011.
Le morceau qu'ils jouent sur cette video s'intitule "Bri Bri codjo", c'est plus ou moins une reprise de "Mannish boy" de Muddy Waters. c'est Anna Fillippi, une grande dame de Ségou qui leur a donné le thème et qui en a écrit le texte. Un texte qui parle des griots du Niger et de ceux du Mississippi....Qu'on espère voir trainer du coté du Rhône le plus vite possible....
